Saturn Awards Predictions

I was just discussing this year’s Saturn Awards nominees with Day last night… without realising that the Saturn Awards ceremony is to be today – June 20. haha (Edit, June 21, 5PM: Blah. First I saw the date June 20 here and there, and now I see that the actual award ceremony is on July 26? And one article noted that the films – presumably the winners? – would be announced on June 20. I’m getting so confused…)

The Saturn Awards honour the “best in science fiction, fantasy and horror film and television” and this year’s will be held in June. I don’t normally take much notice of movie awards apart from the Oscars and sometimes the Visual Effects Society awards. But just for the fun of it, let’s look at the nominees in some categories and I’ll throw out my predictions and such, since I’ve actually seen quite a few of the major films on the list. And we’ll see what the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films says when they actually hold the ceremony later today in California.

.

I’ll split my predictions into three types – the one I think is most likely to win, the one(s) that could win and that I wouldn’t mind winning, and the one I wish would win but isn’t likely to do so. (I won’t have all three for every category; it just depends on whether I have other options I prefer or not.)

I should probably note before anything else that my primary interest in the Saturn Awards is that Captain America has a bunch of nominations here. Otherwise, I normally don’t bother with the Saturns. haha

Best Science Fiction Film

  • The Adjustment Bureau
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Limitless
  • Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  • Super 8
  • X-Men: First Class

Hmm, I’ve seen all of these except for Limitless and Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Not bad.

Prediction: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Could live with: Super 8 or X-Men: First Class
Wishful thinking: Captain America

Best Fantasy Film

  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
  • Hugo
  • Immortals
  • Midnight in Paris
  • The Muppets
  • Thor

Prediction: Hugo

Best Action or Adventure Film

  • Fast Five
  • The Lincoln Lawyer
  • Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
  • Red Tails
  • Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
  • War Horse

Prediction: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
I haven’t seen Fast Five, Lincoln Lawyer or Red Tails… but I think MI:GP is way better. (Ah, such a biased opinion. hahaha)

Best Actor

  • Antonio Banderas – The Skin I Live In
  • Dominic Cooper – The Devil’s Double
  • Tom Cruise – Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
  • Chris Evans – Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Ben Kingsley – Hugo
  • Michael Shannon – Take Shelter

Prediction: Tom Cruise
Wishful thinking: Chris Evans :P
(I’m guessing it’ll be Tom Cruise, but that’s a rather uninformed supposition since I haven’t seen The Skin I Live In, Devil’s Double, Hugo or Take Shelter.)

Best Supporting Actor

  • Ralph Fiennes – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
  • Harrison Ford – Cowboys & Aliens
  • Tom Hiddleston – Thor
  • Alan Rickman – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
  • Andy Serkis – Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  • Stanley Tucci – Captain America: The First Avenger

Prediction: Tom Hiddleston
I’m probably hugely biased here too. haha

(I’m skipping the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards because I haven’t seen any of the movies those actresses have been in excepting Paula Patton in MI:GP. I’ve seen Emma Watson in Harry Potter, but I haven’t seen Deathly Hallows yet. So, meh. *skips those categories* )

  • J. J. Abrams – Super 8
  • Brad Bird – Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
  • Martin Scorsese – Hugo
  • Steven Spielberg – The Adventures of Tintin

  • Woody Allen – Midnight in Paris
  • Mike Cahill and Brit Marling – Another Earth
  • Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver – Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  • John Logan – Hugo
  • Jeff Nichols – Take Shelter

Prediction: Woody Allen – Midnight in Paris
… Assuming they follow the Oscar trends, that is. I should watch that movie; it sounds interesting.

Best Music

  • Michael Giacchino – Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
  • Michael Giacchino – Super 8
  • Howard Shore – Hugo
  • Alan Silvestri – Captain America: The First Avenger
  • John Williams – The Adventures of Tintin
  • John Williams – War Horse

Prediction: Michael Giacchino – Super 8
Wishful thinking: Alan Silvestri – Captain America
Wow… I actually know most of these. The only score here that I haven’t heard is that of Hugo.

Best Costume

  •  Jenny Beavan – Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows
  • Alexandra Byrne – Thor
  • Lisy Christl – Anonymous
  • Sandy Powell – Hugo
  • Anna B. Sheppard – Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Jany Temime – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2

Prediction: Alexandra Byrne – Thor

Wishful thinking: Anna B. Sheppard – Captain America
Yes, I know. I don’t actually think Captain America will win anything. But I’d like it to.

  • Stuart Craig – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
  • Dante Ferretti – Hugo
  • Tom Foden – Immortals
  • Rick Heinrichs – Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Kim Sinclair – The Adventures of Tintin

  • Tim Burke, Greg Butler, John Richardson, and David Vickery – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
  • Dan Lemmon, Joe Letteri, R. Christopher White, and Daniel Barrett – Rise of the Planet of the Apes
  • Steven Riley, Russell Earl, Kim Libreri, and Dennis Muren – Super 8

Prediction: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Wishful thinking: Captain America
I really do think Captain America deserves some accolade for all the CG work that went into “skinny Steve.” But people seem to make more fuss over the mo-cap stuff in Rise of the Planet of the Apes…

Best Editing

  • Maryann Brandon, Mary Jo Markey – Super 8
  • Mark Day – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2
  • Paul Hirsch – Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
  • Michael Kahn – The Adventures of Tintin
  • Kelly Matsumoto, Fred Raskin, Christian Wagner – Fast Five
  • Thelma Schoonmaker – Hugo

Prediction: MI: Ghost Protocol

Best Animated Film

  • The Adventures of Tintin
  • Cars 2
  • Kung Fu Panda 2
  • Puss in Boots
  • Rango
  • Rio

Prediction: Rango
Could live with: Kung Fu Panda 2
Puss in Boots had better not win this…

Now to wait and see how accurate or inaccurate my guesses are. haha

.

Got anything to add or say? :D
